Eligibility Information

If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving - you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!

Thanks to the LEGION Act,  Congress expanded the current eligibility period to cover Dec. 7, 1941, to the present, and includes the current war campaigns. Previously, there were seven declared war periods. Now there are two, the current war period dating back to World War II and another war era covering World War I. No other restrictions to American Legion membership changed.

The LEGION Act was signed by President Trump on July 30, 2019. It allows every person who has served in the United States military after December 7, 1941, to be eligible to join the American Legion.

Active duty is the key to Legion membership. A person need not have served overseas to be eligible, but must possess an Honorable Discharge (DD Form 214).

*Because eligibility dates remain open, all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

See https://www.legion.org/membership/faq for frequently asked questions about eligibility to include Reserve and National Guard periods which may be eligible for membership.
